August is National Immunization Awareness Month.
I’m very much pro-vaccines, and I’ve written many posts on the topic. I’ll link to some at the bottom of the post.
What I like about Dr. Mike, is that he represents a new generation of physicians who want to be more patient centered. Rather than the paternalistic attitude of old, they seek to educate patients and guide patients through shared decision-making.
(At least when the insurance and healthcare overlords allow them to.)
Absolutely parents need to be informed about each vaccination offered to their child. Too often parents are simply handed a piece of paper explaining the vaccine, and before they can read it, they are asked to sign a consent form.
Our fragmented healthcare system also undermines the doctor-patient relationship. Narrow networks and a shortage of primary care doctors makes it more difficult to stay with the same pediatrician or family practice doctor for years.
Physicians have less and less time to spend with patients and their parents, as well.
All of this erodes trust.
I’m not surprised many parents turn to the internet, where anti-vaxxers can easily spread poor-quality information that is little more than propaganda.
As we head into a new school year, I hope parents who are questioning the benefits of vaccines look for trustworthy, scientifically-sound sources for their information.
I think Doctor Mike is one, and here is another of his videos on vaccination.
My Resources page also has a number of good links for Vaccine Information and Safety.
Here’s hoping we see fewer measles and whopping cough outbreaks this year!
